Deploying an Infrastructure for Multimedia Enhanced Learning

A number of university campuses have undertaken the development of digital classrooms. These classrooms provide the ability to present digital media and digitally record lectures or presentations. Deploying the infrastructure for a digital classroom is diicult at best even for a technically savvy person. As people from many disciplines become interested in building similar digital classroom spaces, there is a need to produce a useful set of design and implementation guidelines. The goal of this paper is to report on the experiences we have had in deploying the UCSB digital classroom. Using this guide, a future classroom architect can both reduce project risk as well as steepness of the deployment curve. The two main contributions of this paper are: (1) a phased deployment model; and (2) a concise evaluation of the implementation choices and tradeoos involved with deploying a digital classroom.
